Abigail Adams, American Role Model

by: Moutaingirl

Abigail Adams, who became a wife to one President and mother to another, was renowned as an American figurehead. Diligent and determined, she became one of the most knowledgeable women of her time, even though poor health as a child prevented her from gaining the little education available to young girls. After marriage, Abigail managed their family farm, since her husband was away from home for long periods of time, and still had time to support women’s rights, fighting extensively for an in depth education for females. During the Revolutionary War, she supplied her husband with priceless information concerning the British troops and ships in the Boston area. Undeniably Abigail Adam’s perseverance, deep concern for others, and patriotism made her a valuable role model to a whole nation.

Amazing Felines

By: Moutiangirl
2-7-2007

What amazing animal diligently carries its young to a new hiding spot every few days to avoid having its cubs falling prey to predators? This exotic cat is the leopard. Although these felines were once pursued for their pelts, they are now a protected species and roam forest regions, semi-deserts, and lower mountain ranges of Africa, and Asia with ease. Living as solitary animals, leopards tend to dwell within a defined territory, except when mating and rearing their cubs, and mark it with urine, or by shredding the bark off of certain trees. Stealthy and ferocious, these carnivores’ sharp vision and keen sense of hearing give them the unique ability to avoid detection by their predators and prey, when hunting at dawn and dusk. Although born underdeveloped and helpless, cubs can grow to be a bulky hundred pounds, and look like majestic monarchs with their beautiful spotted pelts of pole yellows to inky blacks. These glorious animals, which can live for over a decade, are nothing short of amazing!

An Unusual Bear

1-31-2007

What exotic newborn bear follows the salvia trail, its mother puts down, to make its way to a pouch on its parent’s back? This bizarre creature is the Koala Bear. Mostly concentrated in New South Wales and Victoria, Australia, this solitary tree-dweller lives clinging to the top branches of the Eucalyptus with its razor-sharp claws and powerful limbs. Although the adult’s diet consists only of Eucalyptus leaves for both food and liquid, the infant bear drinks its mother’s milk and half digested food past through the mom’s rectum. Beginning life at roughly the size of a lima bean the gray, fury and pudgy marsupial adult reaches a weight between seventeen and twenty-six pounds and a height of about two feet. Harsh and unattractive the nocturnal Koala’s call, sounding like sawing wood, could be a bit unnerving during a night time stroll. Koalas may look like average mammals, but they are truly unusual bears.
